The best time for a flu shot and COVID-19 booster is now

For the third straight winter, we face potential surges in COVID-19 cases along with the usual flu season as people gather indoors and spend time around family and friends. Heading into the holidays it’s important for companies to encourage employees, including the healthy ones, to get their flu shot and COVID-19 booster (better yet, at the same time) along with protective measures to stay healthy.

Bivalent COVID-19 booster

The updated COVID-19 booster, known as the bivalent booster, provides immunity against both older and newer strains, is safe and effective, and can be received at the same time as the flu shot. Bivalent boosters are now available and fully covered at no cost to our members. Our dedicated COVID-19 Booster page is continually updated and features appointment scheduling information, vaccine FAQs, and plan coverages in one convenient location.

Annual flu shots

An important thing to remember is catching the flu can be serious for everyone. When someone is down with the flu, daily tasks can be challenging and the person is bound to miss work – not to mention the chance of spreading the virus to friends, family, and coworkers.

Blue Shield of California has various resources such as our dedicated flu page and detailed article for flu basics, coverage, flu vs. COVID-19 information, and much more. Most fully insured plans provide access to $0 flu shots at a variety of convenient locations as well.* Learn more about the CVS clinics here, and direct groups to the CVS Flu Clinic Registration page to request a clinic.

In addition to the health benefits, promoting the COVID-19 booster shots during the flu season may help lower employer group plan costs. As the pandemic approaches an endemic state, it's anticipated the cost of the COVID-19 vaccine and boosters will no longer be funded by the government, transferring costs to health plans and impacting the country’s long term health care affordability. Encouraging your members who plan to get vaccinated to do so before the end of the year may help keep your plan costs lower.

Blue Shield is committed to providing care that is worthy of our family and friends. Stay up to date with the latest COVID-19 information by visiting our COVID-19 B2B site, Member Resources Page, and News Center.

*For most plans, it’s $0. This is because it’s a covered preventive care benefit provided by the Affordable Care Act. Some exceptions apply for select ASO groups. Contact your Blue Shield representative for more details.
